Keyboard shortcuts
Nexo Whisper is primarily controlled with global shortcuts — they work even when the app is not in focus. Here's how to configure them.
Primary shortcut
The main shortcut is the one you activate to record. Default is Fn.
Activation modes:
| Mode | Behavior | |------|----------| | Push-to-talk | Hold down while speaking. Release and transcription starts. | | Toggle | Press once to start, press again to stop. |
To change the shortcut or mode:
- Open Nexo Whisper → Settings → Shortcuts.
- Click on the primary shortcut field.
- Press the key or combination you want to use.
- Select the mode (Push-to-talk or Toggle).
Which key to use?
Fn is the most comfortable for push-to-talk because it doesn't conflict with anything. If you prefer a combination, ⌥ Space or ⌃ Space are popular. Avoid ⌘ Space which is reserved for Spotlight.
Secondary shortcut
You can configure a second alternative shortcut. Useful if you switch between keyboards (external and MacBook).
Middle mouse click
If you use a mouse with a middle button (clickable wheel), you can assign it as a recording shortcut in Settings → Shortcuts → Middle Mouse Click.
Additional shortcuts
Besides the main shortcut, there are shortcuts for quick actions:
| Action | Default shortcut |
|--------|-----------------|
| Cancel recording in progress | Esc |
| Paste last transcription | Configurable |
| Change active AI prompt | ⌘1 to ⌘9, ⌘0 |
| Enable/disable AI enhancement | Configurable |
You can customize all of these in Settings → Shortcuts.
Troubleshooting shortcuts
If the shortcut doesn't respond:
- Verify the Input Monitoring permission is granted (see Permissions).
- Check that no other app is using the same shortcut (System Preferences → Keyboard → Shortcuts).
- Restart Nexo Whisper.
If the problem persists, check the Troubleshooting section.
